Total Insurance Policy
When assessing a company’s stability, it is critical to assess their
insurance coverage. Keep in mind, most Building and Home Owner’s insurance
policies do not cover contractors hired. First, it is very important to receive
a copy of the insurance certificate. However, some companies have been found to
operate fraudulently with regard to insurance. Once they have the certificate,
they sometimes cancel and do not pay their premiums, Therefore, it is highly
recommended to call the insurance company of any company you are planning to do
business with, and have you listed as “additional insured” on their
insurance policy or at least, verify the validity and limits of their coverage.

Also, if
your building or home is worth X amount of dollars, and the policy is
only for X amount of dollars, you should be concerned for your well being. In the
absolute worst-case scenario, what happens if that company has TWO catastrophic
events in one year, you could be left in a fully
un-insured scenario. Look for insurance policies that cover double what you’re
building or homes is worth, and ask the company if they have references for
projects that are at least similar in scope and size.
